Emergency Tips for Fire and Smoke

DO:

  • Secure all personal valuables, artwork, diamonds, jewelry, antiques, etc.
  • Immediate attention for special clothing, minks, furs, leather goods, etc.
  • Remove pets to clean and safe environments (especially birds)
  • Wash plant leaves carefully and remove to clean environment
  • Empty freezer and refrigerator in the event of power outage
  • Pour anti-freeze in toilet bowls, sinks, tubs to prevent freezing if heat is off in winter
  • Change furnace filter if blower is operative

DO NOT:

  • Use exposed food items or canned goods which have been subjected to heat.
  • Use electrical appliances until checked by a professional.
  • Send smoked garments to an ordinary dry cleaner. Improper cleaning may set smoke and odor.

Emergency Tips for Water Damage

DO:

  • Wipe water from wood furniture
  • Remove oriental or other colored rugs from wet carpet
  • Remove valuable oil paintings, furniture, antiques, etc. to a safe place.
  • Use fans, air conditioning, heating system, open windows, etc. for ventilation and to stimulate drying.

DO NOT:

  • Use house vacuum to remove water.
  • Use electrical appliances while standing on damp or wet floor.
  • Turn on ceiling fixtures if ceiling is wet and KEEP OUT of rooms where ceiling is sagged because of water.
  • Hang furs and leather goods to dry separately at room temperature.

DO:

  • Clean up excess glass using extreme caution to prevent injury or further damage.
  • Save any vital pieces of evidence.

DO NOT:

  • Operate damaged electrical appliances or lamps until checked professionally.
